Ziebel performs worlds first horizontal well interventions using the new
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Ziebel have recently performed two very successful well logging interventions in horizontal wellbores having cased and open hole sections. The ZipLog system is based on a semistiff spoolable carbon "rod” that is pushed into live wells for well logging applications, where distributed temperature (DTS) is measured in real time along the entire "rod". Also, the ZipLog system comprises an in-house developed high accuracy fiber optic point pressure sensor. In addition it also has an integrated sensor verifying movement of lower end of "rod" while deploying into the wellbore. This follows a two years development and qualification program performed by a ZipLog team established and based in Norway, where also a 3400 foot horizontal mock-up test "well" has been built.
The rig-up of the system, wellbore deployment and data acquisition functioned very well, where a continued intervention logging program with PDO will follow. Deploying the system in the wellbore we were able to monitor real time data from the wellbore tool transport verification sensor, where we were also able to detect lower "rod" end passing nipple profiles, going from casing to tubing, and entering into open hole section.
The technology inventor, Henning Hansen, VP Technology & Marketing, and Geir Owe Egge, VP World Wide Sales, Ziebel says: "We are very pleased to work with a professional & innovative client such as PDO which has encouraged new technology providing greater value for their assets. The Ziebel team is honored by having their support and willingness to try new technologies to learn more about the wells that will lead to improved and increased reservoir drainage.
Ziebel see the ZipLog system as a game changing state-of-the-art wellbore intervention method that can be further developed to perform a wide variety of wellbore data acquisitions and operations. These first successful jobs, where we have demonstrated a new and very effective R&D method having some of our most professional people involved, are the launch of a service that provides great benefits for our clients."
Furthermore, Ziebel will express a sincere appreciation to all involved in making this technology introduction a success. An especially appreciation goes to PDO and Ziebel field and support team. Peter Male WRM Team Leader for Yibal Cluster, Petroleum Development Oman says: “The first two jobs that were run went off without any problems; in one well the “rod” was able to reach further than in a recent coiled tubing intervention. The quality of the data received exceeded my expectations. We have been able to perform detailed analysis and interpretation that would not have been possible with other technologies.”
The ZipLog solution is patented by Sensornet Ltd., having Henning Hansen (now with Ziebel) as the inventor for the intervention methodology, where Ziebel has the exclusive license to develop and commercialize the system.
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) is the major exploration and production company in the Sultanate. It accounts for more than 80 % of the country's crude-oil production and nearly all of its natural-gas supply.
The Company is owned by the Government of Oman (which has a 60% interest), the Shell Group (which has a 34% interest), Total (which has a 4% interest) and Partex (which has a 2% interest). Gas fields are operated by PDO exclusively on behalf of the Omani Government.
Ziebel, headquartered in Stavanger, Norway, is a respected provider of products that include downhole instrumentation and control systems, innovative well completion solutions combined with reservoir- and flow assurance simulators, downhole monitoring solutions, subsea observation well monitoring, artificial lift solutions, as well as services that include fiber optic well logging interventions, deployment systems, evaluation of reservoir performance and artificial lift optimization.
The Ziebel group has around 220 employees, having main technology units in Aberdeen, Houston and Tulsa. The company has operations in several geographic areas, and is executing several very ambitious and promising R&D programs focused on game changing technologies/ methodologies.
